Qi Baishi Memorial Museum

On September 16, 1957 Mr. Qi Baishi suddenly passed away in Beijing. Shortly after his death, the state once decided to establish the “Qi Baishi Memorial Museum” in Beijing, however, due to various reasons, the construction of the museum did not begin. There was no special memorial museum to enable people to fully understand the artistic achievements made by such an admirable world-class art master as Qi Baishi, which has become a great pity of the fine art community in the past 50 years.
Qi Baishi was the honorary president of BFAA before he died. When the project “Qi Baishi Memorial Museum was shelved, all the collections at the museum was kept by BFAA. Among the collections, besides his paintings, calligraphy, painting drafts, seals and personal letters, there were also a number of valuable photographs and living appliances of his that were donated by his family members. These valuable relics have become the most authoritative and reliable first hand historical materials.

The newly established Art Museum of BFAA specially sets up “Qi Baishi’s Memorial Museum” inside it, where Qi Baishi’s works collected by BFAA are on permanent display. The wish of the vast number of art fans has eventually been fulfilled after nearly half a century. Inside the museum, Qi Baishi’s studio is also restored according to his former residence at Yu’er Hutong. The desk, brushes, ink slab, glasses and book cabinet, etc displayed inside the studio are all objects once used by him. The restored studio of Qi Baishi is also the best testimony of his late life.
